Project Director – Predator Free Rakiura

About us

Predator Free Rakiura is an ambitious and courageous project led by Mana Whenua and the Community to ensure our community and nature thrive together.

Our aim is to develop a single project that will remove the targeted predators for this project and create a natural haven for our taonga and our community, forever.    

About the role

We are looking for an experienced visionary leader to head up this important and history changing project. You will be a passionate, innovative and driven trailblazer who is ready to leave their legacy in this aspirational community-led project. This is a once in a lifetime opportunity to make a real difference to the New Zealand environmental landscape.  

Responsibilities include (but are not limited to):

  • Envisioning, implementing and overseeing the delivery of solutions that ultimately lead to the eradication of targeted species (Feral Cats, Possums, Hedgehogs and Rats) of the Predator Free Rakiura project.
  • Research and development, ensuring the Project is innovative in considering new methods and tools that can achieve the goal.  
  • Creating and building the project team from the ground up. 
  • Providing operational leadership for all employees, volunteers and contractors, managing all aspects of Human Resources and Health & Safety. 
  • Developing relationships with stakeholders, partners and investors including but not limited to; Mana whenua, Department of Conservation, Environment Southland, Southland District Council, Rakiura Maori Lands Trust and the local Stewart Island community.  
  • Developing funding strategy and establishing operating budgets, ensuring the Project has ongoing revenue streams, with the support of the Trust. 
  • Reporting and acting as an advisor to the Board in all Project activities.

The successful applicant will:

  • Have the drive, passion, motivation and ability to inspire others with their vision of Predator Free Rakiura.
  • Possess an entrepreneurial mindset, with considerable adaptability and initiative to get the Project off the ground. 
  • Have extensive Senior Leadership experience in strategic planning, implementation and delivery, managing diverse teams and reporting to a Board.
  • Have significant experience in managing business finances and budgets (in excess of $5 million annually), with a demonstrated ability to achieve targeted results.
