Kaitiakitanga - caring for Tutukiwi / Snipe

In 2015, the whānau of Putauhinu and Kundy Islands came together with DOC to transfer tutukiwi, a taonga species, from Putauhinu to Kundy Island.

This story demonstrates how Ngāi Tahu whānau have come together in their role as kaitiaki to protect our whenua and our people.

It’s about kaitiakitanga, rangatiratanga and whānau.

Aunty Jane Davis says, “We’re now able to distribute species under our kaupapa. We can stand tall, we are now the managers - the kaitiaki - in all senses.”

It’s about kaitiakitanga, rangatiratanga and whānau.
