Ray Phillips - representing New Zealand Deerstalker's Association / hunting interests.
Ray has spent more time in the Rakiura bush than most, having spent the past 30+ years regularly visiting remote parts of the island each year either hunting or maintaining the Rakiura Hunt Camp Trust huts dotted around the entire coastline of the island. Ray is a firm believer in the value of volunteers, speaking both of the rat and feral cat control undertaken by hunters and the efforts of the volunteers who have installed the huts around the island for hunters and others to enjoy.Ray says, “If we didn't care for the environment and the place we spend a lot of our recreational time in, we may not have put so much time and effort into the Island. It would be great to get rid of the predators. I haven’t met a hunter that doesn’t want to get rid of the feral cats and rats. My role on the Predator Free Rakiura Group is to represent the interests of hunters and spread the word (of the Project) amongst the hunting community”.
